Sharing cans
By TIM ROBINSON | August 2025
This one might be a tiny bit of a stretch for our whitewater tripping website, but I need a platform to share this idea. 😁
Do you ever share a tall boy can of beer with friends by pouring into smaller glasses? If not, you don’t need to read anymore. If you do, it's nice right? You can sample several varieties with your pals and not fall over. But when you use a can as a shared pitcher you run the risk of being in a group where some have committed to their own tall boy, and others are sharing. Several years ago I refilled my glass from a can I assumed was a shareable. It was not. I got confused looks as I shamelessly stole beer from someone I just met. Never again. Here's the system to prevent this:
Keep the tab pointing up if it’s a shareable and put it back down when the can is empty. That’s all.
Sounds simple, but it’s elegant in its simplicity. Everyone drinking from a can directly naturally puts the tab down, so that side has full compliance to the system already. If a can starts as a shareable with the tab up and someone finishes the can with their lips, they’ll naturally put down the tab, even if they don’t know the system, otherwise they’ll get poked in the nose. It’s a fool proof system.
That’s all you need. Tab up is for sharing. Share away!
Cheers! 🍻
